Thomas Pink – shirt fit guide

Four different cuts are available.

  • The Classic Fit shirts are Thomas Pink’s widest cut.
  • The Slim Fit is narrower around the chest and waist.
  • The Athletic Cut – launched in May 2014. This shirt has a chest size similar to the Slim Cut, but has a narrower waist. It’s aimed at men who work out and have broad shoulders and a narrow waist.
  • The Slim Fit shirts are the narrowest Thomas Pink shirts.

In the table below all measurements are in inches. The difference between your chest measurement and garment chest measurement should be four inches if you want a relatively tight fitting shirt.  Add five inches for a more typical fit and six inches for a more relaxed comfortable fit.

Thomas Pink review – cuffs and collar manufacturing

[Note – this review below refers to the older style of Thomas Pink shirts. I haven’t had time to review the new ones yet.] All shirt manufacturers I know of insert an interlining into the cuffs and collars of their shirts to make them more robust.  Thomas Pink, like many others, use semi-fused interlinings, which means that their collars and cuffs have an interlining which is fused with the cotton of the shirt.

As part of the Thomas Pink review I took apart one of their shirts. The image shows the fused interlining, (1).  The interlining is separate from the material on the inside of the cuff (2) and fused to the outside (3) of the shirt cuff. This is called semi-fused as the interlining is only fused to the outside. If the interlining was fused to the outside and inside it would be called fully fused.
This image shows how a Thomas Pink shirt cuff is put together, showing the interlining.
The image below shows the collar of the same Thomas Pink shirt. The same construction technique is used: the interlining (1) is separated from and not fused with the back (2), but is fused to the front (3) of the collar. This image shows how a Thomas Pink shirt collar is put together, showing the interlining.

Thomas Pink review – history

The brand is over thirty years old and was created in 1984 in by three Irish brothers: James Mullen, John Mullen and Peter Mullen. The company was named after a tailor called Mr Pink, who operated in the 1700s.  In 1999 the Mullen Brothers sold 70% of their business to the Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH) Group and in 2003 they sold the remaining 30% of the business. LVMH is a French luxury goods conglomerate which owns brands like Acqua di Parma, Bulgari and Givenchy.

Thomas Pink review – where are the shirts made?

As part of the Thomas Pink review I looked at where the shirts are made.  As with other shirt manufacturers, it’s often difficult to obtain clear information on where the shirts are made. On their website they state the shirts are “imported”. In the past, the shirts were made in Ireland. The last shirt I bought was made in Morocco, as shown in the image below.  This article suggests that some Thomas Pink shirts are made by TAL, which makes one in six of dress shirts sold in the US.
